I always wanted to learn a new language. Growing up in Manila, you can only get so fluent in English and Filipino. In college, I had a spreadsheet where I compared the amounts for learning German (Goethe Institut), French (Alliance Francaise), and Spanish (Instituto Cervantes). I must have had what they call paralysis by analysis because I only started last week — learning Mandarin.

I’ve had a free membership at ChinesePod.com since they officially launched in December 2007 but I just filtered their emails straight to label(folder) called (Old/Learn Chinese) so it was hidden right away. I decided to face it, that sometimes you have to spend for something to dedicate yourself to it, like how others pay for exorbitant gym fees or tutors. So I started with the Basic Plan, which is USD 39 for 6 months — exactly PHP 1753.10 (I called my credit card hotline the day after to know the exact peso amount for my monitoring). Less than P300 a month! Beat that! When I get a bit past Newbie, I’ll likely upgrade to the Guided plan.

It’s pretty neat actually. Now that I’ve paid for it, I actually listen to a new Newbie Mandarin lesson at least every other day. My roommates must find it weird when I practice saying aloud “zaoshang hao” (good morning) when I’m still too lazy to get up in the morning.

I download the audio to my iTunes — I have my own feed URL and access to lesson reviews and PDFs. I copy it to my pq1 USB disk (2GB, P540 from CD-R King) so that I can listen when I’m using the HP laptop. I also sync a copy to PalmOne Real Player for JP’s Palm Tungsten T3 which I’ve claimed for myself. And I have a printout of the first 6 Newbie lesson PDFs at my bedside.

It’s really suited for me since I like to do things at my own pace. Affordable quality Mandarin lessons — don’t you just love the magic of the web? I’ve listed other places you can get beginner Mandarin lessons in the real world, however I can’t attest to their teaching methods.

Chinese Mandarin Business Language – Level 2: August 2-30 Saturday PM (Call PTTC at 4688969) ~ P2,500 for 5 Saturdays

Speak/Read/Write Mandarin. 10 Days Guaranteed. Lessons available every Saturday 9am-11am, 3pm-5pm at 32 P. florentino St, Corner Araneta Avenue, Talayan Village, Quezon City. Call Dunric Ng at 412-5493 or 0922-881-1618. ~ Free

Next, I’ll be mastering the First Tone! Xing! But here’s one for you.

Good quality right there. If you sign up for a free membership at Chinesepod via the links on this post, I get a teeny-tiny thank you from them, so I’d appreciate that. And oh, I just remembered. I don’t have a Chinese name So I still can’t fully practice the “What is your name?” exercise. Know how I can get one?

Learn Chinese with ChinesePod.com
Here’s what ChinesePod’s customers are saying…

“I simply love ChinesePod. Keep up the good work!”
“This is a great way to learn. I love the flexibility of the material presented. The podcasts are so listenable and the extra learning tools for the dialogues are extremely helpful.”

I just went to see a model unit in my dream city last week. Die Broke: A Radical Four-Part Financial Plan recommends buying your second home first, so I chose the 3-bedroom unit. When I saw the payment scheme… we’ve got a LOOOOONG WAYS TO GO.

We’d probably get a mortgage. How exactly, I don’t know yet. Same as with credit cards, personal loan requirements would require business owners to show financial statements showing profits for 2-3 years. We start operations in 2008 – so the soonest I can get my house is in 2011?

In the meantime, I have to save for a downpayment of $70,000 in 4 or 5 years time, net of inflation. I’ve already cut my expenses to the bare essentials and my level of savings right now isn’t enough to hit that target so my topline has to be adjusted. I have to earn extra and from that incremental, invest 1/3 back into the business, 1/3 in a high-yield investment with a horizon of 5 years, and 1/3 in balanced funds.

If I make an extra $2,000 per month and invest 2/3 or $1,333.33 at 12% p.a., compounded every quarter for 8 years – I manage to get my $70,000 downpayment – but come on, 8 years!!! H01y$(*#$(!!! There must be something wrong with my arithmetic. But I just followed the FV equation in Excel… sigh. Our business better pick up soon.

I’ll be joining a foreclosed properties meetup this Saturday, January 19, 3-5pm at Gloria Jean’s Coffee in Robinson’s Galleria. Maybe that’ll get me some extra moolah.

If you’re interested in viewing the model units and getting your own, you can contact Jean Azucena, Property Consultant at (+63) 927 860 3414

I wish someone had told me or shown me back in college that I should have skipped the weekly movie trip to Glorietta and saved and invested that allowance. It turns out, what I planned for straight from college and into my first job here in the Philippines is very limited compared to what’s expected of me and, in effect, my financial goals and my supposed budget.

Into my first job where I received quite a large salary for an entry-level, I was conscious of spending for the following expenses:

emergency fund (3 months worth)

Starbucks coffee every day; Nescafe Ice at Mini-Stop when cash on hand runs out P500/week

My share for some lunch and dinner dates with JP at Greenbelt or Powerplant Mall P1,000 – P2,000/week

Nice corporate attire from Black Shop and Zara – because it’s an “investment” at least P5,000 per trip

Snacks at McDonald’s or Goldilocks or the canteen extra P300/week

My Smart postpaid mobile P800/month

SkyCable bills at home, prepaid for 6 months P700/month

PLDT (DSL Internet and Telephone) bills at home P3,000/month

That shouldn’t have been that much but how come my savings weren’t significant?

I spent for what I “needed” (wanted) and then saved what was left over.

I left the money in a separate BPI account, which I could easily access online. So I used it anyway if I wanted to buy something expensive.

Cut down the take-home treats for those at home (because I have a job! Share the blessing!)

I should have decided with my parents which bills I’m expected to share with and the maximum amount I can contribute for: utilities at home, groceries at home, parents’ and aunt’s long-term health care fund, medium-term investments (mutual fund or UIT) for my younger sisters’ education

And then, after family obligations, that’s when I can think about splurging for myself and investments for my house or car or retirement, etc.

I didn’t even have my own credit card then, that would have just made my money management a total mess. I can’t begin to imagine how other yuppies I see taking lunch at Greenbelt everyday and using credit can sleep sound at night.

Now you should too open your eyes to the REAL medium-term financial goals for yuppies. It’s not just saving for your wedding or your first child’s education. You have to map out also how you’ll provide for the family that raised you.

Everyone wants to go abroad.

Two of my high school friends, Rachel and Joy will go to the California, US and Australia to try to establish a new life in “greener pastures”. My aunt is always pushing me to find work abroad for me to prosper. Yeah, I’ll be in Hong Kong later this month for the HPAIR 2007 Business Conference for a couple of weeks – but that’s just to visit.

Why would I want to leave? Not because of the money…

Freedom from this “conservative” society – yet decisions are made on principles and morals, not your environment

Run away from corruption-infestation – traffic enforcement, long lines to get a passport or a license – ah, the simple joys of living in a corrupted developing country?

Young e-commerce and web startup industry. It’s rare to find talented web and software developers and programmers who are willing to give up a cozy job to bootstrap a startup and develop something new and innovative.

Independence – Close family ties have the benefit of saving you rent money but also distorts the concept of independence for young adults. My parents would take it against me if I move out within the metropolis, but it would be okay if I lived alone in another country.I want to stay in the Philippines.

I have no immediate (or medium-term) plans of going abroad to find work. For graduate studies maybe but I’m fine living here in Manila, Philippines. I’d also rather move to the cities of Cebu or Davao when I settle down.

I’m one of the rare Filipinos who won’t go abroad.

Prosperity in entrepreneurship and investing. There’s money to be made right here! Henry Sy is expanding SM by at least 5 SM Supermalls every year and Jollibee is going into the carinderia industry. Heck, the Chinese, Indians, Koreans, and Western expats are migrating here because there’s money to be made off us!

Things are looking up! I almost cried when I heard on the radio that Dr. Romulo Neri was the new Chair of CHED. On one side, the the public now has to confront the reality of the worsening “mismatch” in the education sector. Fortunately, 88% of female college students are starting to recognize the vast potential in the Philippine market and want to become entrepreneurs.

“To solve that mismatch, we have to reorient our education system, particularly higher educatio… So we have to go through more ‘techvoc,’ or technical-vocational, engineering courses. We’re promoting entrepreneurship, education reoriented to entrepreneurship, instead of just [studying to be able to get] employment, among other things.” [Neri is education czar 7/29/07 Inquirer]

On the other hand, the currently unemployed and “mismatched” have to recognize that self-employment, starting their own business, and learning right money management can give them a better life than any instant cash loan or pitiful job (“just for the sake of having a job”) they don’t like.

Low cost of living. Infrastructure isn’t perfect and pollution in Metro Manila is so bad. Still, the Philippines has the conveniences of broadband internet connection, telecommunications. A single individual can live comfortably on $500 a month or even less and still have savings.

Filipino families in the Philippines can even afford a house maid ($2/day) to take care of laundry, cleaning the house, and tending to the children. We spend too like the Westerners but we manage to keep the costs down.

In comparison, just look at the string of OFW-themed movies that display the good and bad of working abroad. It’s sad how they work their asses off, live less comfortably than in the Philippines, and are unable to build enough funds for retirement or for a business.

Do something for the Philippines. I truly want to make a difference – whether it’s just accompanying someone to a money management seminar, or finishing a project for a new client or spreading the campaign for financial literacy. I’m happy to do what I can from my home base.

How do you define wealth?

There is no perfect definition for wealth except that it is relative. For me, wealth is knowing I have a choice and enabling myself to always have a choice. It’s abundance in bank accounts, investments, and businesses. Having money is just part of it, but it’s a very important component of wealth.

Wealth is having the time to go to your kid’s ballet recital, taking her shopping, having a 6-month honeymoon (or longer!). Wealth is building relationships with family and having time to continuously learn. Wealth is never feeling like a victim or having someone else as your boss.

As long as you have to answer to anyone but God or yourself, I don’t think that’s wealth. So if you have to worry about getting fired or what other people say or defaulting on your mortgage, that’s not wealth.

God wants us to be wealthy because how are we supposed to serve His greater glory if we don’t have the time or the choice?

Please challenge my definition.

Jobs after school and CPA boards and behavior from childhood. Oh, what to do with my life?

It’s hard to find work you love; it must be, if so few do. So don’t underestimate this task. And don’t feel bad if you haven’t succeeded yet. In fact, if you admit to yourself that you’re discontented, you’re a step ahead of most people, who are still in denial. If you’re surrounded by colleagues who claim to enjoy work that you find contemptible, odds are they’re lying to themselves. Not necessarily, but probably. – Paul Graham

When I was a young girl, I would go to the mall with my mother (a rare occasion) and merely content myself with window shopping. When I would buy, I would make sure I had good grades first for bargaining power and I would get a book or something “practical”. I don’t remember asking for Barbie or toys or trinkets. That’s not to say I didn’t like looking at them though. I was a miser child.

I never learned gymnastics or figure skating and had only one ballet class. I really enjoyed watching exhibition sports and I have this deep yearning of being the one performing and competing. I knew though that ice skating lessons were expensive and I thought only the pretty popular skinny girls are entitled to do those sports. Looking back though, I was quite slender myself, it’s just that I had dark skin, so there was the whole self-esteem-fair-girls-are-supposedly-prettier issue going on. So I held myself back.

I did get to try acting for a while. I loved performing on stage. I like singing too but have been too shy to perform in public (karaoke is OK!). I even wanted to try out for Ang TV (a local Nick’s “All That” in the 1990s). My mom wouldn’t let me go to the auditions though.

I’ve been good at debate, swimming, and chess but something was missing. Piano and web design are skills that I tried and built on for a while but gave up when I saw that there other’s more gifted. When I tried finance at an international bank, I was doing spreadsheets and cost analysis but something was missing too. When I was at Unilever, there was no mentorship and I’d have gone into finance too, ergo, something was missing too. The Nu Skin business was okay but, aha, you guessed it, something was wrong too.

(Now you’re thinking – Marie, you just have to get yourself some experience! You’re so arrogant! Why don’t you content yourself with these really good opportunities others can’t even imagine!)

My mom says there is no perfect workplace. I think that the workplace is where you work. It’s where YOU work – it’s not the place that works you. YOU are the one who’s doing so isn’t it logical to believe that YOU have the choice?

Studying my behavior from childhood and reading up on polarity and the universal laws have guided me to realize that I have been messed up – by myself and by my environment. I want to polarize. I need to polarize. I choose to positivize. I need to be in a position where I could give to people, have an impact in their lives. That’s why I loved acting, writing, speaking, and leading.

That’s what’s been missing! In finance as a support service, whatever effort I was giving only benefits the internal customer, then it’s diluted from him to all the other stakeholders. (They should teach this in ORIENT3 career counseling class.)
Many people get by never really deciding whether they want to give, give, give or to take, take, take. Let’s say writers. In a perfectly polarized world, Writer A is driven to create beautiful stories – and then he’s compensated some way. Conversely, Writer B wants to gain prestige and get fees or royalties – so he writes. What happens when Writer A = Writer B? Now that’s messed up. You don’t know which motivation is driving what effort but the writer will most likely get by. This is what happens ordinarily.

I’m a CPA. CPAs play an important role in regulation and transparency of businesses. They provide value by offering a thoroughly studied opinion. It will take a number of years to do the actual signing of the audit opinion though. Before you earn that privilege, you have to foot, do sampling, spend sleepless nights (and wasting your beauty, health, and youth) checking stacks upon stacks of invoices, receipts, and bank statements. The benefit you provide as a junior goes to to your senior associate and from him it’s diluted to the partners, the clients, SEC, and the public. You can’t see the smile on the client’s face (IF ANY). Thank God, I didn’t listen to the elders (some even top business leaders) who say “Go to SGV! You’re young! You should gain experience…” I’d reasonably expect I would have been miserable if I’d gone to audit. I do hope my friends who are in audit feel motivated and inspired where they are. Apparently, it’s just not me.

So, I think a call center job could work. OR setting up a business. Or being a writer (like here!). Or acting (where you can see the delight or dismay yourself – not diluted!). When you’re an account executive, you service a client or customer directly. Something in relationship management, client service, or training could more likely click for me.

It would be best if I can apply what I know of economics/finance/accounting to provide value to others. In time, I’m seriously considering personal financial planning. I would guide others in creating and building wealth! The field is just so beautiful to me.

How about you? Do you know what you want to do with your life?

As certain as we were born, so shall we die. That doesn’t mean we ought to kill ourselves. There’s still the here and now that we deserve and can choose to enjoy! Go to the beach! Look pretty! When you’re drawing your last breath, you really won’t be thinking “I should have submitted that report on time!” The sad and harsh reality is, if you die or even if you just quit right now, your company will just post another wanted ad and find a replacement. Your family, your boyfriend, your friends, could never just post a wanted ad.

Stay healthy.

Hey, don’t cry. I’m just reminding you to stay healthy so that you can enjoy your life with the people that matter most. Your annual physical exam isn’t enough. Conventional medicine, i.e. going to your doctor or googling your symptoms, takes care only of your physical health. You need to nurture your mental and spiritual health as well.

Feed your brain.

Read a personal development book or play a mind-intensive game every now and then. I used to love to play chess but haven’t for maybe 2 years now. It takes too much brainpower thinking of all the probabilities. Go to Powerbooks or Amazonto buy a real book every so often in a field that you like. That’s up to you!

If you were to ask me for my topics, here they are. If I get enough requests, I’ll post a book list.

Are you physically healthy?
How do you know if you’re healthy? How do you know the “complete” vitamins over-the-counter, cheap or expensive, really work? Sir Bombit from my Economics Research class shared that a field is only a science only if it’s falsifiable. How do you measure? This is the only rigorous way I found.

Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants found in abundance in certain fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids neutralize damaging free radical molecules and are absorbed in human plasma and tissue, providing an excellent indicator of a person’s antioxidant level. Unlike other methods of measuring antioxidants (which fluctuate throughout the day), your Skin Carotenoid Score shows the stable level of carotenoid antioxidants in your skin – providing you with a more accurate and reliable biomarker of your antioxidant level. (The scoring system is based on data gathered from more than 1,300 individuals with a variety of diets.)

Your Skin Carotenoid Score will help you determine whether you are consuming an adequate amount of antioxidant-containing nutrients. Unlike other biomarkers that you may be familiar with, your Skin Carotenoid Score does not predict disease or pre-condition of disease.

Basically, getting your Skin Carotenoid Score makes you aware of the antioxidant levels in your body-and gives you the push you need to improve your overall antioxidant health. The Healthy Skeptic of the Los Angeles Times provides an objective review of this cool gadget that does the measuring: Biophotonic scanner.

Are you conscious about your health? Yes or no, you ought to start taking supplements now. I’ve just started myself. I’m sticking to products that have clinical research even though BFAD doesn’t regulate health supplements. Are you taking supplements too or want to start? Can you share your Skin Carotenoid Score from the Bioscanner?

Leave a comment with your email or cell if you’re dying to find out if you’re dying!
(Read: Let me help you get your score. It costs PHP150. If you’re abroad, I can send you a link. I also have a doctor friend with whom I can schedule a free consultation for you – tight schedule though!)

In an easy and relaxed manner, in a healthy and positive way, in its own perfect time, for the highest good of all, I intend $1,000,000 to come into my life and into the lives of everyone who holds this intention.

Chris Gardner says, “You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can’t do something, so they wanna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.” If you’re like most people I know, you have other hobbies or dreams that you’ve dreamed of doing as a child but never got to because of “practical reasons”. You have bills to pay and siblings or children you have to send to school. That house isn’t going to buy itself and you have to pay your parents back for their investment in you.

You need to think more clearly about the things you want in life. Don’t just think of doing better this year so you can get a positive performance review and possibly get a salary increase next year. There’s something else you can do.

Do you think a million dollars would make you happy? $1,000,000. That’s P50 million. We can talk about how to manage it in my next posts but, first, if you get this windfall, will it make your problems go away? For now, let’s think about all the good things that come with getting the $1,000,000.

Intend for the $1,000,000 to come to you. Say it with me – loud and clear.

In an easy and relaxed manner, in a healthy and positive way, in its own perfect time, for the highest good of all, I intend $1,000,000 to come into my life and into the lives of everyone who holds this intention.

That wasn’t so hard, was it? Steve explains why it’s worded exactly that way. You have to say it aloud just the way it says.

See. Do. Get.
You envision your goals first and clarify how you view the world or your paradigm. This affects what you do and subsequently what you get!

Maybe you can fine-tune your seeing first before blaming your boss, the world, your parents, your boyfriend, the government, because you don’t have what you want.

Manifest your intention.
You have a choice now. Just because I believe I can and will have a million dollars doesn’t mean you can’t. This is why I’m writing. I’m asking you to believe that you can. You have nothing to lose and a million dollars to gain by believing and manifesting your intention.

If you believe you have or want to have at least some control over your life, let’s work together. Let’s choose to be financially free. To start seeing, join the million dollar experiment. To start doing, we can discuss options so leave me a comment.

Comments from investment advisor Dr. Sjuggerud [in brackets] and my responses (in italics)about the 8 important elements of economic success derived from Dr. Thomas Stanley’s study of more than 1,300 millionaires :

Understand that there are key success factors that our economy rewards; they include: being honest with all people, hard work, integrity, and focus. [I was amazed to learn that the top of the list was "being honest with all people" - even above hard work!] Note that the list doesn’t include being born to the “right” family. It has to be clear that hard work is rewarded more substantially by the economy when magnified by a system and not just by the 30% premium on the labor rate for overtime.

Never allow a lackluster academic record to stand in the way of becoming economically productive. [Can you believe that the average millionaire graduated college with a 2.9 GPA - and that's if he even graduated!] I have always gotten good grades. I study hard and work hard because I like doing my best. Don’t let your good grades sucker you into a non-millionaire life!

Have the courage to take some financial risk. And learn how to overcome defeat. [Handling defeat is a big key in investing - the most important - and toughest - thing to do is to Cut Your Losers.] Funny Dr. Sjuggerud! Cut your losers! This is something I have to confront because I happen to really like doing well. I cried once when I got a failing exam score – which rarely ever happens. The very bright side is that the deviation or any possible low point has a point on the positive side of the spectrum! Calculate your risks.

Select a job that is not only unique and profitable; pick one you love. That oomph, that passion. I’m young. I can let myself find it and try new stuff that pique my interest. Don’t cage yourself.

Be careful in selecting a spouse. [Economically productive people marry men or women who share the characteristics that are most compatible with success.] That and good-looking.

Operate an economically productive household. [Many millionaires prefer to repair or refinish rather than buy new.] Filipinos love the pride that comes from having bought firsthand. I really want that house in Tagaytay. I guess the millionaire found a way to neutralize caveat emptor.

Follow the lead of millionaires when selecting a home – study, search, and negotiate aggressively.

Adopt a balanced lifestyle. Many millionaires are “cheap dates.” It does not take a lot of money to enjoy the company of your family and friends.
