I’ve long been awaited a retirement fund akin to the IRA or 401(k) in the United States. Even Malaysia has the Finally, the Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA) Law has been approved by GMA and now awaiting IRR.

Championed by Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, he brings up the startling fact that 8 million Filipinos have no pension or retirement savings. Even scarier is that the reserves of SSS will run out by 2011; GSIS will run out by 2040 (World Bank study) — I haven’t found which paper this is; SSS will run out 3 years from now? Dire.

Next Step: Information Campaign for Entrepreneurs

SMEs/Entrepreneurs like myself can really maximize the PERA account once DOF finalizes the IRR. I can’t wait. Especially when I encourage tech-entrepreneurship, I’m troubled when I feel they should first get their personal finance in order. Especially now, with the onset of so many work-from-home virtual assistants and freelancers, Multiply/Sulit/<http://ebay.ph">eBay businesses, they don’t have the benefit of usual HRD programs. This way, the government helps them save — and maybe make them report their income too.

Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, a principal author of the bill said the country’s savings rate would go up to about 30 percent of gross domestic product, from 19-23 percent, with the signing of the law by the President. He said the scheme is expected to attract eight million individuals, specifically OFWs, and self-employed individuals or entrepreneurs who are not required to contribute to the SSS and the GSIS. Office of the President

How will PERA work?

I, as an “Individual” can contribute up to P100,000 a year to my PERA account. I can invest it in a UITF, mutual fund, bank deposit, etc. Supposedly, I can only choose one administrator (bank or financial company). Most likely Sun Life or BPI for me. What about diversification? I contribute regularly and can withdraw at age 55, proceeds will be tax exempt.

Rode the jeep to Walter Mart yesterday, paid exact P16 (P8 minimum fare x 2 for me and JP) and was told by the very smug driver that I had to pay another P1.

I allot P600 for commuting every month. That’s for jeepney rides, the rare bus ride, and MRT Stored value P100. Sigh. I used as P7.50 as my base when I computed that… I guess I should add about P50 or P100 more to my transportation “allowance”.

BUT… I had 2 jeepney rides today and they both charged only P8. Either:

a) not all the jeepney drivers know about the P1 price increase; or
b) I got a greedy driver yesterday.

I don’t have a TV in the pad so I don’t know if this was in the news. So I looked it up (source).

Time to adjust our commuting allowances! I wonder how much this affects the daily commuters who take a really long trip from the house going to the workplace.

PUJ, PUB, Taxis – Public transport prices up

Jeep

Sigh, I remember filling up my car with about P47/liter… Now it’s up to ~P61? I haven’t been using my car since December 2007, maintaining, parking, and driving it in the city just wasn’t worth it even if it’s 1.3 engine.

Block off tomorrow, June 21! Music starts 1 pm.
It’s probably going to be a really long walk to the different stages, so forget the super-arte gimik attire and go for comfortable sneakers or sandals and jeans.
I just realized I don’t have photos from the concerts before. I guess I should start with my old Olympus.

I saw old friends LA and Nikko. I also met some interesting people: Jes, Guy, Orly, Tony, and many others.

From 3-6pm, Josiah shared about how traditional business strategies have to resort to price and promo wars because they’re competing for their share in the same market. This is playing in the red ocean – a zero-sum game and you’re not as profitable as if you were in the blue ocean!

Nine Key Points of Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS)

BOS is the result of a decade-long study of 150 strategic moves spanning more than 30 industries over 100 years (1880-2000).

BOS is the simultaneous pursuit of differentiation and low cost.

The aim of BOS is not to out-perform the competition in the existing industry, but to create new market space or a blue ocean, thereby making the competition irrelevant.

BOS offers a set of methodologies and tools to create new market space.

While innovation has been seen as a random/experimental process where entrepreneurs and spin-offs are the primary drivers – as argued by Schumpeter and his followers – BOS offers systematic and reproducible methodologies and processes in pursuit of innovation by both new and existing firms.

BOS frameworks and tools include: strategy canvas, value curve, four actions framework, six paths, buyer experience cycle, buyer utility map, and blue ocean idea index.

These frameworks and tools are designed to be visual in order to not only effectively build the collective wisdom of the company but also to effectively execute through easy communication.

BOS covers both strategy formulation and strategy execution.

The three key conceptual building blocks of BOS are: value innovation, tipping point leadership, and fair process.

One very popular and successful implementation is the P1 or Everyday Lowest Fares of Cebu Pacific. By taking their eyes off the traditional air passengers and finding out how to target non-users, such as those who use ferries (like WG&A Superferry and Aboitiz) and those who just don’t fly to travel because it’s too expensive.

In a nutshell, they did away with non-value adding services of traditional airlines and improved on what ships offered. They did away with newspapers, meals, and lounges, enabling them to streamline their processes, buy new and safer planes, and offer more frequent flights!

As I understand it, blue ocean strategy requires you first to think out of the box. Then to implement, you have to conduct a rigorous value-added analysis of your industry, your competitors, and your alternative industry (e.g. ships vs. planes).

There are many great business ideas. Timing and strategy matter as much as your intent. Good intent also plays a role — if you want to help people with your product or service, your good intent will be rewarded somehow.

I will be applying this learning for our next JV presentation — details to be released once we’ve sealed the deal!

In the Philippines, you can learn more about blue ocean strategy through special trainings by Mr. Josiah Go’s group Mansmith and Fielders.
